Just Our Luck

Another day for us here in the Philippines. Typhoon Yolanda (Haiyan) has finally exited the building and what remains is the destructive mess it has left in so many affected areas including the city I am from, Cebu . Just a few weeks ago we've been hit by a 7.2 magnitude earthquake followed by a hurricane passing last Tuesday and with just our luck, a typhoon hits us days after.

As I sat on my bed with my warm sweater and a cup of coffee I kept thinking about others who aren't as fortunate as I am. I was listening to the news from the radio during the rest of the day since the power was out. Desperately trying hard to understand deep bisaya but I'd like to think I got the main idea. Good thing, most of us were prepared since PAGASA was able to detect the typhoon earlier. People were already at evacuation centers ahead of time and had everything ready. The great thing about Filipino culture is everyone helps each other out one way or the other. Listening to people's stories as to how strangers have helped them out during this chaotic time really touches my heart.

I hope most of us have already settled down. My prayers go out to everyone who was affected by the typhoon not only in Cebu but all over the Philippines.

Goodbye Yolanda!

  1. Where I live, natural disasters are rare, so I can't even imagine. Take care of yourself, Gillian . . .
